One of the epic questions of all time is the one posed by Pilate, a pagan politician, in the City of Jerusalem on the eve of the most famous Passover ever. Facing Jesus, the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world, the bruised and abused Son of God clothed in human flesh, the Roman governor of Judea asked him that famous question, “WHAT IS TRUTH?” (John 18:38)
Really, what is truth? Is it a thing, or an idea? A perception, or a hard fact? And while we may genuinely attempt to answer this riddle through science, philosophy, logic or ethics, the answer will always glare us in the face through another epic statement spoken just hours before Pilate voiced his question. Comforting and exhorting his disciples during the Last (Passover) Supper in Jerusalem, Jesus said to them, “…I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). There you have it.
Whatever else Truth is and wherever else it may be found, it will always be anchored in the person of the Son of God. He, Himself, embodies the very essence of TRUTH, and all truth, whether scientific, moral, historical, or philosophical is part of Him. Remember how Jesus warned his accusers regarding the devil, saying, “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44). Lies and deception form a rotten foundation to build anything on, and they are the cause for the ruin of any community, empire and family that is built upon them. Remember the Garden of Eden? We lost paradise because we believed a lie!
Now we may better appreciate the gravity of the Lord’s answer to Pilate long ago, saying, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the TRUTH. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” (John 18:37)
As this age of grace draws to its conclusion with biblical prophecies finding their ultimate fulfillment with increasing rapidity and intensity, Truth is assaulted all around us. Morality is ‘bent’ to embrace ungodly and weird aberrations; economy is manipulated to bind multitudes to greed and debt; culture is twisted to popularize new idols; and history is re-written to prop up lies. In this environment, as the Lord warned long ago, not many can discern the Truth or hear His voice.
Israel is at the heart of this battle for Truth as far as God’s character, credibility and covenant promises are concerned. The bottom line is spelled out in Jeremiah’s ancient words, saying, “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’” (Jeremiah 31:10) As things seem to move forward, Israel, as a nation and as a people, may be standing all alone in a darkened world before long.
